Danilimda woman accuses husband, in-laws of dowry harassment, physical abuse

A 32-year-old woman from Danilimda has filed a complaint alleging sustained physical and mental harassment by her husband and in-laws for dowry over several years, with demands totalling up to ₹10 lakh.
The complainant, identified as Suraiya Jindran, originally from Rajasthan, currently resides in Danilimda. Suraiya has been married to Imran Farooqbhai Jindran since May 3, 2015, as per traditional customs.
Suraiya alleged that soon after her marriage, her in-laws—including her husband Imran, mother-in-law Fatima, brother-in-law Irfan, and sisters-in-law Salma, Sajia, and Shahina—began pressuring her for dowry. Her husband, who works in Dubai, allegedly demanded large sums of money to support his business and repeatedly coerced her into asking her father for funds.
The complaint states that Irfan initially demanded ₹3 lakh to finance Imran’s travel to Dubai, a sum which Suraiya’s father eventually provided. Despite this, Suraiya claimed that the abuse intensified. Her husband used to call late at night, verbally abuse her, and pick fights. When she was pregnant for the first time, she was subjected to such physical violence that she had to undergo an abortion.
Suraiya stated that although she briefly reconciled with her in-laws after an initial fallout, the harassment resumed, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, when her husband demanded an additional ₹10 lakh.
In May 2019, Suraiya gave birth to a son, with her father again covering all medical expenses. Yet, she claimed that the pressure for dowry persisted. Fearing for her safety and that of her children, she left her marital home on November 2, 2020 with the assistance of her brother and returned to her parents’ home in Ahmedabad, where she has been living since.
Suraiya, who had refrained from complaining now for fear of "ruining the family’s reputation", has finally approached the police, naming her husband and six in-laws as accused. An FIR has been registered at Danilimda police station under relevant sections of the BNS for dowry harassment and domestic violence.
