The division of Banaskantha to form a new district – Vav-Tharad – in Gujarat came as a surprise. As some talukas in Banaskantha protest the division, there are reports of more of the division of the districts in the state in future.

According to sources, Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Kutch, and Mehsana districts may be divided, hinting at four to five new districts in Gujarat.

Ahmedabad city may become its own district after division from Ahmedabad, suggested the sources. However, there is no possibility of that happening before December 2025, they suggested.

Formation of Vav-Tharad

The cabinet meeting of the state approved the formation of Vav-Tharad on January 1, with the new district’s headquarters as Tharad.

Out of the 14 talukas of the existing Banaskantha district, eight talukas and four municipalities have been included in the newly formed Vav-Tharad district.

However, since this decision, protests have started in many talukas including Diyodar and Kankrej.

The newly formed Vav-Tharad district will include a total of eight talukas namely Vav, Bhabhar, Tharad, Dhanera, Suigam, Lakhani, Diyodar, and Kankrej.

The remaining six talukas in Banaskantha district will include Palanpur, Danta, Amirgarh, Dantiwada, Vadgam, and Deesa.
