Gujarat cybercrime department arrested a young man from a small village in Madhya Pradesh, based on a complaint from a woman who reported the WhatsApp scam through the cybercrime helpline.
The scammer hacked WhatsApp accounts, sends messages, and requested money from the victim’s contacts, claiming they needed help to pay school or college fees.
Preliminary details revealed that more than 100 young women across Gujarat and other states have been cheated in this way.
One of the victim approached the state cybercrime helpline (1930) and reported that her WhatsApp account had been hacked. The hacker contacted her friends and family, claiming that money was needed to pay fees.
Following her complaint, the cybercrime department registered a case and began an investigation. They discovered a mobile number and an SBI bank account used in the scam. Further investigation revealed that this mobile number had been used to target women from Gujarat and other states, with multiple instances of money being transferred.
The investigation revealed that the scammer was operating from the small village of Badra in Anuppur district, Madhya Pradesh. The police there, with assistance from the cybercrime cell, arrested the accused, Prabhat Gupta. During questioning, Gupta admitted to targeting more than 100 young women, mainly school and college students, by hacking their WhatsApp accounts. He would then send messages to their friends and relatives, asking for money to pay school or college fees.
Gupta was found in possession of two mobile phones, 11 SIM cards, 12 debit cards, and bank account books.
The cybercrime department is continuing to investigate how Gupta obtained the contact information of these young women and how he managed to hack their WhatsApp accounts.
