Gujarat witnesses over 17k cyber fraud cases in four years

In a significant surge in cyber fraud cases, Gujarat witnessed a total of 17,460 cases in four years.
Shaktikant Das, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), revealed that digital transactions have increased by 90 folds in 12 years in India.
In 2012-13, digital payment of ₹162 cr was recorded which increased to ₹14,726 cr this year.
Among the states, Gujarat stood at the seventh rank in cyber fraud cases with 17,460 cases registered and victims lost ₹96 cr.
The highest number of cyber fraud cases were registered this year in Maharashtra (1.25 lakh), followed by Tamil Nadu with 25% of total cases, and Delhi with 9%.
Other states included Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Karnataka.
With the increase in digital transactions, mainly after the COVID era and demonetization, cyber frauds have also witnessed a surge across the country.
In the financial year 2023, the country witnessed 75,800 cyber fraud cases, which increased to 2,92,800 cases in the financial year 2024.
Victims lost a staggering ₹421 crores in 2023 and ₹2,054 crores in 2024.
In four years, between 2020 and 2024, 5,82,000 cyber fraud cases were registered and people lost ₹3,207 in the country.
Cyber security has become a major concern in the country. Private-sector banks are more prone to fraud than public-sector banks. For example, banks like Kotak Mahindra, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, and ICICI Bank have witnessed fraud cases.
