Kutch MLA stands for sacked GMDC workers, requests Guv to reinstate them
Updated: Sep 30th, 2024
After over 300 workers of Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC)-run thermal power plant were laid off, Abdasa MLA Pradyumansinh Jadeja reached out to Governor of Gujarat Acharya Devvrat for help after “CM did not pay heed to his requests”.
In the remote village of Nani Cher in the Lakhpat area of Kutch, around 350 employees of the GMDC-run Akrimota Thermal Power Station were laid off without being served any notice.
Despite many employees’ long serving tenures at the power plant, they were sacked without a formal notice.
Being a remote border area, such jobs are the primary source of livelihood for the locals of Nani Cher. With their jobs taken away, 350 employees have been protesting for the past 20 days. However, no resolution has been reached yet, and no official has even visited the protest site.
BJP’s P M Jadeja, an MLA from Abdasa, made several representations to Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and other ministers regarding the issue, but the problem remains unresolved.
Finally, the MLA approached Governor Devvrat and reportedly said, “You are above the chief minister. If you say something, our work will get done.”
“In the border areas, agricultural activities are not sufficient and locals are entirely dependent on jobs. Now that they have been dismissed from their jobs, their employment has been taken away. This situation has forced the locals to consider migrating. In these circumstances, the government should urgently take a decision and reinstate the locals in their jobs,” said Jadeja.
Amid the tall claims of Vibrant Gujarat employing Gujaratis, locals somewhere in the remote areas of Kutch await jobs and decent livelihoods.
