In 5 years, 54 acid attacks on women reported in Gujarat

At least 54 women have been victims of acid attacks in Gujarat over the past five years, according to figures presented by the central government in Parliament. The data ranks Gujarat sixth among Indian states in terms of reported acid attack cases.
The parliamentary figures indicate a rising trend in such crimes. In 2020, eight cases of acid attacks on women were recorded in the state, while the number rose to 15 in 2023, nearly double the number in three years.
The data also revealed that 280 cases related to acid attacks were pending before courts in Gujarat, highlighting delays in the judicial process for victims seeking justice.
Recently, in Kalol, near the state capital Gandhinagar, acid was allegedly thrown on a woman police officer. Police said investigations into the case are ongoing.
Officials note that acid attacks are often linked to a range of motives, including domestic disputes, failed relationships, personal enmity and other conflicts. Such attacks are considered among the most brutal forms of violence against women, frequently causing permanent physical and psychological harm.
The Supreme Court has previously directed that victims of acid attacks should be provided with a minimum compensation of ₹5 lakh to support medical treatment and rehabilitation.
