Human Rights Commission to probe online booking of lion safaris in Gir

Updated: Sep 19th, 2024

The Gujarat State Human Rights Commission has launched an investigation into the unauthorised online bookings for Gir Lion Safari and other activities at Gir National Park. The commission has sought clarification from senior forest department officials and private website operators involved in the matter.

The inquiry was initiated after receiving complaints about unauthorised bookings on the website “Gir Online Booking” without official approval from the forest department.

Complaints were also about the visitors being overcharged. The commission has demanded a detailed response from all parties involved within a week.

The Gir National Park has its official website and allocated vehicles for safaris. The commission has questioned the authority of private operators to accept bookings and charge visitors.

They have also inquired about the permission granted to take bookings during the park’s closure and online booking. The commission has raised concerns about potential cyber fraud and ordered an investigation into the matter.

The commission’s order has been sent to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and the head of the forest department for their clarification and action.
