Gujarat summers: Heat wave, health issues, and temperatures reaching 40°C

With the fury of scorching heat, people in Gujarat have fallen prey to illnesses related to heat

Though the heat has been relatively placated in some areas of Gujarat, the mercury in the state capital, Gandhinagar, stood at 40°C, while Ahmedabad experienced 39°C on Mar 29.

Several districts witnessed less than 40°C temperatures on Mar 29, including Amreli and Vadodara at 39.4°C, 39°C in Ahmedabad, 38.7°C in Rajkot, 37.3°C in Bhavnagar, 36.7°C in Bhuj, 37.2°C in Surat, Dahod at 36.1°C, Chhotaudepur at 36.0°C, Kandla at 35.5°C, and Porabandar at 34.6°C.

Illness due to heatwave

With the fury of scorching heat, people in Gujarat have fallen prey to illnesses related to heat.

As the onset of summer in Gujarat has brought unbearable heat, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels even at night, a total of 5,433 individuals were rushed to hospitals in ambulances due to deteriorating health conditions between Mar 23 and Mar 28.

Cases such as abdominal pain, dehydration, fainting, headaches, extreme stress, and heatstroke have been on the rise in Gujarat.

The highest number of emergencies were related to stomach aches, of which 1,804 cases have been reported in the last six days. Moreover, a total of 1,122 people had to be shifted to the hospital due to sunstroke.

Ahmedabad’s emergency cases

Out of the total 5,433 cases in the state, 1,498 cases are from Ahmedabad. 27% of the state’s total emergency cases have been reported from Ahmedabad.

An average of 250 people in Ahmedabad have fallen ill from the sun every day during the last six days.

While in Rajkot, 44 people were given emergency treatment due to sunstroke in the last two days. An average of 22 people have fallen ill every day in Rajkot.
