Gujarat students in AI and Data Science fields struggle without teachers
Updated: Sep 16th, 2024
Nearly 50% of government engineering colleges in Gujarat are struggling with a severe shortage of teachers for emerging fields such as Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Robotics. This issue arose despite the government’s efforts to introduce and expand courses in these high-demand areas over the past two years.
The Gujarat government had initiated a major restructuring of engineering branches and increased seats for students to align with the growing importance of fields like Data Science, Robotics, and AI. However, this plan has hit a snag as many of these branches are now operating without qualified faculty members. As a result, students are facing academic losses, with some colleges having zero teachers in important subjects.
Despite offering 75 seats in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, AI, and Data Science fields in colleges across Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, Bhavnagar, Gandhinagar, Palanpur, Rajkot, Surat, and Bharuch, there is not a single teacher for these programs.
The absence of qualified teachers is causing severe disruptions. The National Accreditation process, essential for maintaining educational standards and student employability, is at risk due to the inadequate staffing. Colleges are forced to rely on faculty from other branches, leading to an overstretched workforce and further compromising the quality of education.
In response to the crisis, the education council has granted colleges the autonomy to hire teachers from universities. However, these new hires require training that has yet to be provided.
