Gujarat incurs ₹250 cr loss over damage to public properties in heavy rains

Gujarat has been devastated by over a week-long stint of heavy rains, causing widespread destruction. Initial estimates suggest that the damage to government properties alone exceeds ₹250 crore.
A central team has arrived in the state to assess the damage caused by the deluge. After their survey, the state government is expected to announce a relief package. Parallely, the state government will conduct its survey and submit a request for aid.
The agricultural sector has suffered significant losses due to the excessive rainfall. At the same time, urban areas such as Vadodara also experienced extensive property damage.
Heavy rains have wreaked havoc on infrastructure, including roads, bridges, government buildings, electric poles, telecom infrastructure, trees, poultry farms, and hay warehouses.
Government estimates indicate that 4,173 km of roads have been washed away in affected areas, and 1,543 bridges have sustained damage, requiring urgent repairs.
Additionally, 59 primary and community health centres and five district health centres have reported damages.
Eleven hay warehouses, 178 telecom infrastructures, and 29 government buildings have been severely impacted by the rainfall.
Around 6,59,898 trees have been uprooted, and nearly 9.84 lakh nursery plants have been damaged. An estimated 1,012 roadside trees have collapsed due to the storms.
Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have also toppled 23,972 electric poles, while 1,974 transformers in the affected areas have been damaged. Furthermore, 940 km of power lines have been impacted.
The Sardar Sarovar Project has also estimated a loss of ₹12.1 crore due to damage to canals and other infrastructure.
In the education sector, a preliminary survey reveals damage to 587 government schools.
Additionally, 290 poultry farms have suffered losses. The death toll among livestock could go well up to 5,172. Moreover, 127 wells, ponds, and canals have been damaged due to the heavy downpour.
The government is expected to assess the full extent of the losses before making any further announcements regarding relief efforts.
