The controversy surrounding the vasectomy operation of two young men in Mehsana district has stirred a hornet’s nest. Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel defended the work carried out by health workers claiming it to be voluntary work. The health minister also said that no one is forcibly sterilised. But now a notice has been issued to the health department employees for non-fulfilment of sterilisation targets.

This contradicts what the health minister said.

Two young men were allegedly sterilised without their knowledge in Navi Sadawi and Jamnapura of Mehsana district, which pointed fingers against the health department’s work. From November 24 to December 4, a male sterilisation fortnight was observed in Gujarat, under which the health department employees were given district-wise targets. However, to meet the target, the health employees tried various ways to target innocent youth.

It has now come to light that the Health department has issued notices to health workers of Dangarwa, Julasan, Meda, Adaraj, and Karan Nagar Primary Health Centres of Kadi taluka. These notices establish that the Health department sets targets for vasectomy operations and completes it.

The notice clearly states that vasectomy targets not met after repeated instructions is a serious matter. If work is not done satisfactorily based on the target within the next three days, administrative and disciplinary action will be taken.

This notice has brought to light that the health department and the health minister are not on the same page as far as the issue of vasectomy is concerned.
