Gujarat HC lifts ban on release of Junaid Khan’s ‘Maharaj’

Updated: Jun 21st, 2024

Gujarat High Court today lifted the ban on the movie Maharaj’s release on the OTT platform, allowing its release, reported the media. The movie stars Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan in the lead.

The movie was originally slated to release on Netflix on June 18, however, the release was put on hold by the HC when concerns were raised that the movie may disrupt religious harmony.

Lifting the ban today, the court observed that the movie was already certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and the book it is based on came out in 2013, and no incidents of disruptions of communal harmony have been reported.

On June 19, the Court decided to watch the film and then decide whether to release or hold the movie.

The court also observed that Karsandas Mulji, on whom the movie is based, was also from the Vaishnavate community, and the movie does not affect or hurt religious feelings, according to an online legal news portal.

The high court also observed that the right to freedom of expression could not be curbed before the movie is released, according to the portal.
