Gujarat government set to announce nine new municipal corporations

In Gujarat, nine ‘A’ group municipalities are set to be upgraded to municipal corporations, leading to an increase in the number of municipal corporations in the state.

The Gujarat government plans to make this official announcement on December 25, during the celebrations of Good Governance Day. On this day, the nine municipalities will be officially declared as municipal corporations. 

According to the sources, if these nine municipalities become municipal corporations then it can merge with smaller municipalities and then the number of elections to be conducted could be reduced from 85 to 60.

Earlier, during the presentation of the 2024-25 state budget in the legislative assembly, the government announced that seven municipalities would be converted into municipal corporations. As part of this, the municipalities of Navsari, Vapi, Mehsana, Nadiad, Surendranagar, Gandhidham, Morbi, Porbandar, and Anand were upgraded.

While the Election Commission is preparing to conduct municipal elections, the state government’s move to elevate these nine municipalities to municipal corporations could result in significant changes.
