The Gujarat government is set to offer compensation to farmers for damage caused to land, crops, and fruitful trees because of transmission lines and towers passing through their fields at 200% of the current jantri (Gujarat’s regulated land assessment and taxation values) rates regulated by the state government.
If no improvements are made to the jantri rates, an annual increase of 10% will also be considered.
Compensation rates are speculated to be doubled after this decision was taken by the state energy minister, Kanu Desai.
Desai commented on this, “Compensation will now be provided at 25% of the land area, instead of the previous 15%, considering the width and length of the transmission line passing over the farmers’ land. A network of transmission lines will also be planned out with the local administrative authorities to avoid agricultural fields.”
It is noteworthy that the Gujarat government’s resolution from Aug 14, 2017, regarding compensation for damage caused by transmission lines and towers was amended in December 2021 to increase compensation. These rates have been hiked once again after a two-year period.
