Gujarat drivers pay ₹37 lakh fines daily for violation of traffic rules

The increasing number of traffic rule violators in Gujarat has resulted in 1,825 drivers being fined daily on an average and ₹37 lakh fines collected from the offenders for reasons including not wearing a helmet or seatbelt, driving without licence or jumping the red light.

As per information received, between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, 33.31 lakh challans were issued in the state, and fines amounting to ₹680 crore collected. However, compared to other states, the percentage of challans issued to drivers in Gujarat is low. 

During this period, the highest number of challans (5.57 crore) were issued in Tamil Nadu, and a fine of ₹755 crore was collected from the drivers.

Uttar Pradesh drivers were issued 4.40 crore memos, and they paid a whopping ₹2,495.18 crore. Kerala, Haryana, and Delhi are in the third, fourth, and fifth positions, respectively, in terms of the highest number of memos issued. 

According to experts, traffic police conduct drives in the middle of the year to control the increasing number of accidents. The number of drivers speeding and using mobile phones while driving is increasing.
