Internal tensions within the Gujarat Congress have resurfaced, with a fresh controversy erupting over the appointment of the Patan Scheduled Caste (SC) cell president. The dispute has brought two Congress MLAs—Jignesh Mevani and Kirit Patel—into open disagreement, drawing reactions from community leaders and intensifying political debate in the region.

The row escalated following a public rally in Patan to mark the anniversary of Veer Meghmaya Satam, during which Mevani made an aggressive statement during a public speech.

He allegedly said, “If anyone thinks we're going to harm Hitendra Pithadiya, they should forget about it. They are insignificant and cannot to anything.” His remarks, delivered in an aggressive tone, have since triggered sharp reactions within the party.

Responding to the controversy, Patan MLA Kirit Patel stressed the need for restraint, saying political leaders must be mindful of their language to preserve social harmony and avoid fuelling class or community tensions. He underlined that public statements should not create divisions within society.

Patidar leader Varun Patel stated that, irrespective of political affiliations, Kirit Patel should be seen as a social ally, warning that provocative rhetoric could pose risks to peace and stability. Another leader, Dinesh Bambhania, cautioned Mevani against crossing limits, advising that leadership driven solely by ego and survival politics does not yield lasting success.

It is understood that Kirit Patel has expressed dissatisfaction with the appointment of the Patan SC cell president, a move that appears to have triggered the latest internal discord.
