Gujarat braces for water crisis as reservoir levels plummet before summer

As cities like Bengaluru face the torment of water scarcity before summer sets in, the 207 water reservoirs in Gujarat are also left with an alarming water level of 62.38%. Only 10 reservoirs in the state have a water level of more than 80%.

Region-wise, the water level is 43.77% in 15 reservoirs of north Gujarat, 68.05% in 17 reservoirs of central Gujarat, 68.96% in 13 reservoirs of south Gujarat, 38.31% in 20 reservoirs of Kutch, and 36.42% in 141 reservoirs of the drought-prone region of Saurashtra.

The vast Sardar Sarovar dam also has average water storage, currently standing at 66.75%.

The water level of 36 reservoirs in the state is less than 10%. Most of the reservoirs with low water levels are in Saurashtra. There are 68 reservoirs where the water level has fallen below 20%.

Meanwhile, some reservoirs in the state had already dried up before the onset of summer. The water levels of Gadhki and Sani in Devbhumi Dwarka, Advana and Amipara in Porbandar, and Prempara in Junagadh have reached 0% zero.

As of Mar 7, there are few reservoirs in the state with a water level of more than 90%. These include Aji-2 in Rajkot and Vansal in Surendranagar.

There are 8 reservoirs with water levels between 80% and 90%. These reservoirs include Machhu-3 in Morbi, Kalaghogha in Kutch, Hiran in Junagadh, Wanakbori in Mahisagar, Jawanpura in Sabarkantha, Hadaf in Dahod, and Lakhigam in Surat.

8 reservoirs have water levels between 70% and 80%.
