A dam safety unit in Gujarat, along with an emergency plan, was recommended to the state in a report presented in the state assembly, citing data from the Gujarat state dam safety organisation (GSDSO).
GSDSO examined 53 dams in Gujarat during the 2022–23 period and mentioned in the report that none of them required any major repair work or had any major issues. None of these dams caused any accidents during this tenure.
After the implementation of the Dam Safety Act of 2021, Gujarat formed the GSDSO to examine and analyse the dam conditions thoroughly.
Acting on the central government’s order, the GSDSO scrutinised the current condition of Gujarat’s 530 dams.
Most of the dams require minimal work to be done as formalities.
All these dams are categorised as specified dams, which are built before the implementation of the act. They are termed to be of category-III, requiring minor remedial measures which are rectifiable during the year.
The report further adds that an emergency action plan should be constituted as per the Central Water Commission’s (CWC) guidelines.
30 of these dams, including Adhia, Savli, Limla, Dhanora, and Fakirwadi, among others, are more than 100 years old. The water reserve capacity of these dams is tested during the monsoon season.
