Govt withdraws fee hike from 13 medical colleges in Gujarat
Committee to conduct the admission process again in 13 medical colleges operated by the Gujarat government

After rows of heated protests by students, their parents, and student unions in merely a month, the committee announced the withdrawal of the fee hike and refund process on Aug 8. This is after the decision taken in July this year by the state government where a revised fee structure with a sharp raise across 13 Gujarat Medical and Education Research Society (GMERS) colleges was announced.
Though privatisation of all 13 colleges was announced in Apr 2022, the college fee regulation committee is still operated by the government.
Students will face delays in admission
Despite protests and opposition, 6,000 students were admitted with the new fee structure. Due to the sudden decision, the first round of 6,000 medical and dental admissions were cancelled, and the admission procedure will start again.
Decoding the fee structure numbers
| Quota | Fee hikes as of July 2023 | Fee after hike withdrawal as of Aug 2023 | % rise in fee |
| General | ₹5.50 lakh | ₹3.30 lakh | 67% |
| Management | ₹17.50 lakh | ₹9.07 lakh | 88.88% |
| NRI | $25,000 | $22,000 | 13.63% |
In 13 colleges, 75% of the seats are reserved for the state quota, 10% for management quota, and 15% for the NRI (Non Resident Indian) quota.
The fee hike announcement had faced a considerable backlash from multiple student unions and medical aspirants.
