Adani Group failed to provide 85% of jobs to locals in Mandvi, admits Gujarat government
Despite grand promises of employment generation and substantial investments with initiatives like Vibrant Gujarat to attract industries, the reality paints a different picture of the state.
It was revealed in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly that in Kutch’s Mandvi, the Adani Group has not hired 85% of locals for jobs the group was mandated to do so. Despite the blatant violation of rules, action is yet to be taken against the conglomerate.
While industries continue to receive land at highly subsidised rates and other incentives, the Gujarat government’s revelation suggests that industries mandated to offer ‘85% of jobs for locals’ in lieu of incentives should not remain on paper, but should be implemented.
In response to a question posed by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar in the Assembly, the government admitted in the assembly that Adani Power Limited in Mundra, Kutch, has not provided 85% employment to locals as mandated.
Congress MLA Jignesh Mevani also raised concerns in the assembly about the lack of minimum wages and the severe exploitation of workers. He questioned whether the labour department, which lacks sufficient staff, intends to fill vacancies or not.
In response, Cabinet Minister of Industries, Civil Aviation, Rural Development, Labour and Employment, Balvantsinh Rajput responded by stating that the government does care about the workers.
