In a first for Gujarat’s capital city, the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) has introduced an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based traffic signal system on one of the city’s key stretches, aimed at ensuring smoother vehicular movement and improved road safety.

The smart signal has been installed at the Happiness Circle, located under the metro bridge on the Bhaiyapura Bridge–PDEU–GNLU–GIFT City road, considered one of Gandhinagar’s most prominent corridors.

Officials said the AI-powered system will automatically adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic flow, reducing unnecessary waiting time for commuters.

Unlike conventional signals that operate on fixed timers, the new system prioritises lanes with higher vehicle density and minimises green signal duration on relatively empty roads.

Authorities believe the initiative will help reduce congestion, prevent accidents and save time for motorists. The system is also equipped with features to support automated traffic regulation, including the ability to detect violations and issue penalty memos to vehicle owners using digital tools.

According to district traffic police officials, the project has been launched on a pilot basis and initial observations indicate positive results.

Given Gandhinagar’s varying traffic patterns during peak morning and evening hours, officials said the system could play a key role in streamlining movement across the city.

If successful, similar AI-driven signals may be introduced at other locations in the future to further improve traffic management and reduce road congestion.
