Five hospitals upgraded to GMERS in two years, 500 seats added: health minister

Minister of state for health, Rushikesh Patel, in reply to a question asked regarding GMERS (Gujarat Medical Education & Research Society) of the state in the Assembly House, said that five new GMERS medical colleges have been added in the state in the last two years. Under which 500 new medical seats have been increased.

Rajpipla, Navsari, Porbandar, Godhra, and Morbi district hospitals have been upgraded and included under GMERS.

Giving details, Patel said that a total of 2,100 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate courses have been made available under 13 new medical colleges in the last 20 years under GMERS by the state government.

So far, the state government has allocated an amount of ₹5,244 cr for the management of 13 colleges of GMERS.

In contrast, the tuition fee income has been ₹2,216 cr.

Out of the 2,400 students (2,100 in UG and 300 in PG), 1,743 or 72% of the students benefit from various scholarships namely Mukhyamantri Yuva Swavalamban Yojana (MYSY), Mukhyamantri Kanya Kelavani Yojana, Post Matric Scholarship, Chief Minister Scholarship Scheme (CMSS), and Freeship Card.

Apart from this, the state government has so far allocated ₹4,287 cr for the construction of eight colleges. He added that ₹976 cr (40% from the state and 60% from the Centre) have been allocated to the new five colleges, he said.

In 2023-24, 13 colleges and 14 hospitals have an estimated expenditure of ₹1,250 cr against the estimated revenue of ₹375 cr from the tuition fees of 13 medical colleges owned by GMERS.

Against this, the government has allocated ₹843.21 cr for the expenses of colleges and hospitals.

The minister also provided details about the management of state government-owned medical colleges and said that 1,400 UG seats and 1,329 PG seats are available in six government medical colleges in the state. 

In the year 2023-24, the state government has provided ₹895 cr against the fee income of ₹7.37 cr.
