Five booked for attempt to murder after man brutally assaulted in Shahpur

A 35-year-old man is battling for life after he was allegedly attacked with a bicycle wheel, crowbar and other blunt objects by a group of five men during a violent altercation in Ahmedabad’s Shahpur area late on Wednesday night, police said.

As per a complaint lodged at Shahpur Police Station, the incident took place around 9 pm on April 29 in Shankarbhuvan locality.

The victim, identified as Arvind alias Dabba Parmar, sustained grievous head injuries and is undergoing treatment in critical condition at Civil Hospital, Asarwa.

Police said the complaint was filed by the victim’s sister, Rekhaben Parmar, 31, who alleged that the accused, identified as Pradeep alias Bhutho Chauhan, Deepak alias Pupo Chauhan, Mazar Khan Sutabhai, Manjula Abhinbhai and Mehul Parmar, assaulted her brother with the intention of killing him.

The violence stemmed from an earlier altercation involving the victim’s brother Kamlesh and one of the accused near the slope at the end of Gandhi Bridge in Shahpur. Arvind had allegedly intervened in an attempt to pacify the situation when the confrontation escalated.

During the assault, one of the accused allegedly struck Arvind on the head with an iron bicycle wheel, while others restrained him and attacked him with a crowbar and other blunt weapons, police said. The attack reportedly left him bleeding profusely before the assailants fled the scene.

Locals gathered at the spot and alerted emergency services, following which the victim was shifted to Civil Hospital in a 108 ambulance.

Shahpur police have registered a case of attempt to murder and related offences against the five accused and launched a manhunt to apprehend them.

Investigators said the precise motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained.
