Gujarat has witnessed a sharp rise in road accident injuries in 2026, with an average of 26 people injured every hour, according to official data.

Figures from the state’s emergency response service, 108 Emergency Service, show that 73,815 people were injured in road accidents between January and April this year. This translates to an average of 615 injuries per day.

The data marks a 26% increase compared with the same period last year, when 58,780 road accident cases were recorded, with an average of 490 injuries per day.

Among districts, Ahmedabad reported the highest number of accident-related injuries. A total of 11,093 cases were registered in the city during the first four months of the year, up from 9,591 cases in the corresponding period last year, an increase of 13%.

Officials said that in Ahmedabad alone, an average of four people per hour require emergency assistance following road accidents.

Data further indicates that nearly 40% of all accident cases in the state are concentrated in four major cities, Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot.

Experts attribute the majority of accidents to factors such as overspeeding, use of mobile phones while driving, and driving on the wrong side of the road.
