Cost of living in Gujarat highest in India, Surat costs more than ₹68k: report

Amid incessant tom-toming by the establishment of making the state hospitable for all sections of society, Gujarat has emerged as the most expensive state in India in terms of cost of living.

According to a digital derivation conducted in June this year by livingcost.org, a crowdsourced database platform, the cost of living in Gujarat aces past all the states to around ₹47,000 ($560) every month.

The report further showcases the cost of living in four cities of Gujarat, with Surat, having a population of 59.4 lakh, leading with a price of ₹68,000 ($809).

The diamond city is followed by Ahmedabad, which houses 76.5 lakh people, and the cost of living is indicated to be around ₹42,410 ($505).

Thereafter, Vadodara, with 20.7 lakh people, is placed third with a cost of ₹33,507 ($399). The report lastly mentions Rajkot, with a population of 13.4 lakh, which costs ₹29,650 ($353) to live in.

As for the country, the cost of living in India is estimated to be around ₹37,000 ($441).

This figure, however, stands 2.37 times below the global average.

Moreover, India ranked 191st out of 197 countries by cost of living, greatly surpassing China ($679), the USA ($2,433), the UK ($2,183), Canada ($2,042), Russia ($652), and Australia ($2,293), among others.

The livingcost.org website mentions that the prices are crowdsourced by their users and compiled with over 20 other public data sets. These numbers are then processed by their predictor algorithm, after which they derive at a particular figure.
