BJP suspends Mavji Patel, other rebels ahead of Vav bypoll
Updated: Nov 11th, 2024
With just two days to go for the Vav Assembly seat bypoll, a drama has ensued between the BJP, rebel leader Mavji Patel, and the Chaudhary community.
Dissatisfied with the BJP, Patel has filed nomination as an independent candidate in the Vav bypoll, reports suggest.
Earlier, Patel clarified that he had filed his candidacy because the party "did not grant him a ticket", not due to disloyalty.
The BJP has now suspended Patel for opposing the party and targeting state president C R Patil.
Apart from Mavji Patel, BJP has also suspended former chairman of Bhabhar Market Yard Lalji Patel, former chairman of Jilla Sahakari Kharid-Vechan Sangh Ltd Devji Patel, current chairman of Bhabhar Market Yard Dalram Patel, and former secretary of Suigam taluka Jama Patel.
Chaudharys resist
With leaders from the Chaudhary community suspended, loyal supporters of the ‘Anjana Chaudhary’ community in Bhabhar are now at loggerheads with the BJP.
Dubbing the party’s move as 'unfair', the Chaudhary community has decided to boycott BJP.
During the Vav bypoll campaign, Mavji Patel not only targeted Patil and the BJP, but also Gujarat Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary.
Attacking his past, Mavji said that Chaudhary had to leave the Vav constituency and choose Tharad as he "failed to develop Vav".
“Why is the Radhanpur-Bhabhar Highway in dilapidated condition, even though the MLA is from BJP?” said Mavji during his campaign.
In Vav, caste equations play a substantial role with 3,10,681 voters. The largest group is the Thakor community, followed by Rajput and Chaudhary.
Mavji Patel will face the BJP’s Swaroopji Thakor and the Congress’s Gulabsinh Rajput in the Vav bypoll, scheduled for Nov 13.
