Vav Assembly bypolls puts BJP in fix after 60 members want to contest

Updated: Oct 18th, 2024

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in a conundrum as over 60 candidates expressed their aspiration to contest the Vav Assembly seat bypoll scheduled for November 13.

A three-member observer committee was appointed including Asarwa MLA Darshna Vaghela for the ‘sense’ process in Vav.

On Thursday, the observers reached Lohana Wadi in Bhabhar where over 60 candidates evinced interest in contesting Vav bypolls.

Some of the names up for the race include Swarup Thakor, Piraji Thakor, Gajendra Rana, and others along with their supporters.

With such a huge number of aspirants, there is a possibility of internal clashes in the BJP, which happened during the Lok Sabha elections of April 2024.

Analysing local equations, three names will be suggested and dispatched to the high command.

With the BJP’s defeat in the Lok Sabha seat of Banaskantha, the party will leave no stone unturned to win the Vav seat.

The Vav bypolls will be held on November 13, with the results to be announced on November 23.

The seat was left vacant after former MLA Geni Thakor brought Congress its sole win during the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

In the Legislative Assembly election of 2022, Thakor defeated BJP’s Swarup Thakor with over 15,000 votes.

Before that, in the Assembly election of 2017, BJP’s Shankar Chaudhary was defeated in the fortress of Thakor.
