As Gujarat grapples with the Chandipura Virus that affects the children the most, over 330 community health centres in the state lack paediatricians.

According to the Rural Health Statistics Report 2022, community health centres in Gujarat do not house general surgeons, gynaecologists, and paediatricians. Only 14 health centres have special doctors.

Around 262 sub-health centres lack basic amenities like water and electricity. The increasing death toll due to Chandipura which claimed 22 lives so far, highlights the urgent need for child specialists in the state.

As many as 330 physicians, 310 eye surgeons, and 295 gynaecologists are required at health centres across Gujarat’s villages, according to reports. Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) specialist doctors are also scarce at these centres.

Moreover, 2,828 sub-health centres, 171 PSI, and 27 community health centres are yet to be constructed.
