AMC to use zero liquid discharge technology at Kotarpur water treatment plant
In a stride towards sustainability and attaining the goal of a ‘zero waste city’, a new water treatment plant will be built to provide clean water to a population of 2.2 million within 30 months in Ahmedabad.
The work will involve building a new water treatment plant and a zero liquid discharge (ZLD) plant worth ₹230.42 cr.
The water treatment plant with a capacity of 400 million litres per day (MLD) is being built at the Kotarpur water treatment plant under Amrit-2.0 and SWAP-3 by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC).
The work of building the plant, laying pipelines, and setting up a ZLD plant to use the backwash water of all the existing water treatment plants at Kotarpur as raw water, along with operation and maintenance for five years, has been awarded to contractor Girdhari lal Aggrawal Contractors Pvt Ltd at a price 3.59% higher than the estimated cost.
The use of ZLD technology will save AMC’s ₹7 cr annually. Currently, 1150 MLD of water is being treated daily at Kotarpur.
“4% water is used for the sludge mover, filter backwash, and other operations during treatment,” said the standing committee chairperson.
This water cannot be used as the amount of sludge is high. To save 4% of water daily, the plant will be built using ZLD technology. The backwash water will be recycled and taken into the inlet, where it can later be treated again and used as raw water.
A total of 40 MLD of water will be recycled daily.
