AMC to build two plants to convert floral waste to incense sticks, gulal

The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is set to build two processing plants in East and West Ahmedabad to manage the flower waste from temples in the city.
Floral and coconut waste is generated daily from around 350 temples and other religious sites. To process this waste, the AMC will set up two processing plants—one in the eastern zone and one in the western zone of the city—at a cost of over ₹2 crore.
The floral waste will be processed to make products such as incense sticks (agarbatti) and coloured powder (gulal). For this purpose, the Health Committee has decided to allot two acres of land at Gyaspur to Omkar Enterprise at a nominal rent of ₹1 per sq m.
Every day, about two tonnes of floral waste is collected from temples and religious places across city wards, as per reports. Under the Swachh Bharat Mission grant, the AMC will establish the two plants with a capital cost of ₹62.5 lakh per plant. The processing cost for floral waste is estimated at ₹2,521 per tonne, leading to a total expenditure of ₹1.8 crore for processing operations.
The committee has also decided to assign the construction and operation of the plants—including two years of operations and maintenance—to an agency. According to the committee chairperson, the agency’s performance will be evaluated after two years, and a decision will be made regarding any extension of the contract.
