Gujarat produces 2.71 lakh tonnes of plastic waste in one year

Every hour in Gujarat, approximately 31 tonnes of plastic garbage are generated, as per a report presented in the Gujarat High Court.

The court had earlier inquired whether the rules for disposing of plastic waste are being followed in the state and sought answers from eight corporations.

Following that, a report presented in court for the year 2022-23 which revealed that 2.71 lakh tonnes of plastic waste were generated in just one year in Gujarat.

In India, however, Gujarat ranks sixth in terms of generating plastic waste. In a year, the highest amount of plastic waste was recorded in Tamil Nadu at 7.81 lakh tonnes, followed by Telangana with 5.28 lakh tonnes, and Delhi at third with 4.03 lakh tonnes.

The majority of plastic waste consisted of plastic bags, followed by plastic bottles, FMCG product packaging, grocery plastic bags, and food wrapping plastics.

Plastic waste has caused numerous problems for the world, including the pollution of the rivers and the seas. Plastic waste is also linked to severe health issues, including cancer.
