All talk no action: Govt cuts grants of 75 entities fighting against drugs
The recent surge in drug seizures in Gujarat, a state known for its stringent prohibition laws, highlights a deeply concerning trend that contradicts its ‘dry state’ image.
Over just 12 days, authorities have confiscated substantial quantities of narcotics including heroin, drugs, and marijuana. Ruling party BJP has been bragging about the drug seizures but this influx of illegal substances not only underscores a failure in enforcement but also raises serious questions about the efficacy of existing measures to curb drug trafficking.
In Gujarat, while the Home Department has launched drug addiction rehabilitation campaigns, awareness activities, and public awareness programs, the government itself has cut grants to over 75 organisations fighting against drugs. Questions have been raised about the effectiveness of the Gujarat government’s policy to eliminate drug abuse.
In the last five years, 93,991 kg of drugs have been caught in Gujarat, while 2,229 litres of drug fluids and 93,763 drug pills-injections have been seized.
