Ahmedabad receives over two inches of rain, waterlogging reported at 300 locations

Ahmedabad witnessed continuous downpour on Sunday with 2 inches of rainfall recorded in several areas. Ranip recorded the highest rainfall at 3.5 inches, Motera 3 inches, and the city average stood at 2.5 inches. More than 300 locations across the city experienced severe waterlogging, disrupting normal life.

Since Saturday evening, Ahmedabad saw a rainy spell across most parts. By midnight, heavy showers accompanied by thunder lashed several areas. Between 6 and 7 am on Sunday, Thaltej received the highest 1 inch of rain. As the day progressed, rains intensified with Naroda, Kotarpur, and Hanspura recording an inch of rainfall within just one hour.

Zone-wise averages 

East – 1.45 inches, West – 2.50, Northwest – 2.40, Southwest – 1.80, Central – 2.15, North – 2.50, South – 2.0 inches. With today’s showers, the city’s cumulative rainfall this monsoon season has reached nearly 40 inches. The Vasna Barrage reported water level at 131 feet. Sardar Sarovar received an inflow of 13,939 cusecs, while the Vasna Barrage released 93,958 cusecs into the Sabarmati.

A total of 27 gates of Vasna Barrage were opened. Over 300 complaints of waterlogging were received—mostly from the East Zone (64). Additionally, 81 complaints of tree falls, 32 of dangerous buildings, and 6 of electrocution risks were reported.

First time in 8 years: Over 1 lakh cusecs released

For the first time since 2017, more than 1 lakh cusecs of water was released into the Sabarmati River. Previously, 90,000 cusecs were released in 2019, and 50,000 cusecs in 2022. This time, the figure crossed 1.07 lakh cusecs.

Areas waterlogged across the city

Maninagar, Khokhra: Worst affected, knee-deep water.

Naroda, Odhav, Vatva: Waterlogging from Narol Circle to inner industrial roads, causing hardship.

Sarkhej, Jodhpur: SG Highway service roads flooded; numerous vehicles broke down, severe traffic jams.

Thaltej: Knee-deep water at Thaltej bridge.

Memnagar: Several low-lying homes flooded; overflowing drains worsened the situation.

Sardarnagar: Extensive flooding in low-lying areas; heavy traffic towards the airport.

Isanpur: Underpasses submerged.

Vastral, Chandkheda: Several localities waterlogged.

With over 1 lakh cusecs released from Dharoi and Sardar Sarovar dams, the Sabarmati Riverfront (walkway) was submerged by 10.30 am.

People were strictly warned not to venture near the riverbanks as water levels kept rising.

At Godrej Garden City, even the police outpost was flooded, creating difficulties for police personnel.

Residents of low-lying areas were evacuated as a precaution: 25 families from Parixit Nagar (Old Vadaj) and four families from the Vasna crematorium area were shifted.

The underpass near Gandhi Bridge was closed for commuters. Despite warnings, large crowds thronged the river.

Ahmedabad temperature drops by 6°C

Ahmedabad’s average maximum temperature dropped by 5.2°C, settling at 27.7°C. According to the Met Department, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next two days.
