South Gujarat Reels Under Torrential Rain as Umbergaon Records 183 mm in 2 Hours

South Gujarat witnessed an intense spell of monsoon rain on Thursday morning, with several talukas in Valsad, Surat, Navsari and neighbouring districts receiving heavy to very heavy rainfall within just a few hours. The downpour was particularly severe in Valsad district, where Umbergaon emerged as the worst-hit taluka.

According to data released by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Umbergaon recorded 183 mm of rainfall between 6 am and 8 am, the highest in the state during the period. Surat’s Umarpada received 130 mm, while Pardi logged 94 mm. Kaprada and Nanapondha in Valsad district recorded 84 mm and 83 mm of rainfall respectively.

Valsad, Surat and Navsari receives the maximum rainfall

The heavy showers continued the intense monsoon activity that had already lashed South Gujarat earlier in the morning. Between 4 am and 6 am, Umbergaon had already received 192 mm of rain, followed by Umarpada with 112 mm and Pardi with 97 mm. Vansada in Navsari recorded 93 mm, while Valsad town received 85 mm.

Other areas that witnessed substantial rainfall between 6 am and 8 am included Khergam in Navsari with 65 mm, Bharuch taluka with 58 mm, Vapi with 58 mm, The Dangs with 57 mm and Vaghai with 56 mm.

Monsoon intensifies across Gujarat

The ongoing spell comes amid forecasts of heavy rainfall across parts of Gujarat, with the India Meteorological Department warning of continued monsoon activity in several districts. The IMD had earlier issued weather alerts for parts of South Gujarat, including Valsad, Navsari, Tapi, Dang and Narmada districts.

Heavy rains have also led to flooding and waterlogging in parts of South Gujarat, particularly in Valsad district, as monsoon activity intensified across the region.

The latest rainfall data indicates that South Gujarat remains at the centre of the current monsoon surge, with districts along the southern belt recording some of the highest precipitation levels in the state.
