Ahmedabad gears up to host Youth Olympics 2029 and Olympics 2036
Updated: Mar 14th, 2024
An action plan is taking shape to make Ahmedabad a strong contender for the Youth Olympics to be held in 2029 and the Olympic Games in 2036.
Chief minister Bhupendra Patel recently chaired a high-level meeting with the minister of state for sports and youth affairs, the secretary of sports and youth affairs, and senior officials for this.
It was decided in this meeting to build a sports and knowledge city on 500 to 1,000 acres of land in Manipur and Godhavi villages adjoining Ahmedabad, say sources.
As part of these initial preparations, AUDA (Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority), Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC), and various NGOs have commenced initial projects in these areas.
CM’s meeting for developing sports infrastructure
Sources also mentioned that the prime subject of discussion in the meeting was the acquisition of land in the villages.
Recently, the urban department surveyed 500 acres of land near Godhavi in Ahmedabad. It was informed that the survey area is an ideal location for developing a sports city.
The sports city will reportedly be developed on the upcoming 90-metre-wide ring road, adjoining Thaltej-Shilaj Road, Sindhu Bhavan Extension Road, and Bopal-Shela Road, which will provide it with smooth connectivity from Ahmedabad.
Its connectivity will be further enhanced with the future expansion of the Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) and BRTS (Bus Rapid Transit System).
The process of measurement and registration for the land acquisition has been initiated.
Land acquisition for the mega project
The current jantri rates at Godhavi are around ₹2,500 to ₹3,000 per sq m.
If the government goes for acquisition, the acquiring agency will have to pay 4.25 times the jantri rates as per the current land acquisition policy.
The CM has instructed the officials to expedite the land acquisition process, as the government aims to construct this project in the next three years.
The sports city will be equipped with sports stadiums, sports education, hostels, schools, colleges, and skill development universities.
In addition, infrastructure facilities will be planned for one lakh students.
