GU to offer seven foreign language courses with Olympics 2036 in sight
To be country’s first state university to teach seven languages
Govt will approve the new staff structure
As part of the preparation for Ahmedabad’s ambition to hold the 2036 Olympics, the government directed Gujarat University to establish a foreign language department. A proposal for the same was prepared by the university, to provide the state with foreign language experts.
The department is likely to commence operations in the next academic year, making Gujarat University the only state university in the country to teach as many as seven languages.
Seven languages including Chinese, Japanese, Russian, French, Arabic, German and Spanish will be taught in this department.
Earlier, the university had a ‘study abroad’ department which taught foreign languages to students and provided certificate courses. However, it was closed down the line.
The proposal, now approved by the state government, has a provision to offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses, as well as diploma and research programmes.
The language courses offered would be University Grants Commission (UGC) recognised, and recruitment of the permanent staff will also be executed according to UGC rules.
At present, there is a foreign language department at the Central University of Gujarat, Gandhinagar, where foreign languages are taught.
