Ahmedabad fire department records 250 incidents during Diwali festivities

Ahmedabad witnessed a sharp rise in fire incidents during this year’s Diwali celebrations, with the city’s fire control room receiving over 250 emergency calls between October 18 and 23. 

On average, around 50 fire calls were reported daily during the festive period. Tragically, one person lost his life after being trapped in a blaze.

Fire dept received 254 calls

In preparation for Diwali, the Ahmedabad Fire Department had all its staff on standby, with all leaves cancelled. Between October 18 and the night of October 23, the department received a total of 254 calls. 

According to fire department sources, the highest number of incidents — around 130 calls — were related to garbage fires triggered by firecrackers. 

Additionally, 40 house fires, 19 shop fires, and 13 vehicle fires were reported. There were also 12 factory fires, including one at Riddhi Steel, where two individuals sustained burn injuries. One of them was treated as an outpatient at L G Hospital, while the other was declared dead on arrival.

The department also recorded four godown (warehouse) fires, 17 tree fires, and several minor incidents involving banks, wooden stalls, hotels, bakeries, electricity meters, DP boxes, and slum areas catching fire.

Over 40 people treated for firecracker burns

In view of the Diwali celebrations, Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) had arranged special facilities at its hospitals to treat people injured by firecrackers.

More than 20 patients were treated, and over three were admitted to the indoor ward at L G Hospital.

According to official sources, no patients were admitted to SVP Hospital, while Nagari Hospital treated over 15 outpatients and admitted two. At V S Hospital, more than five patients received treatment for burn injuries.
