Air India, Indigo to implement new hand baggage rules in 2025

Two of India’s most prominent airlines, Tata Group-owned Air India, and Indigo, an LCC, are set to introduce new hand baggage rules for passengers, effective from May 2025.

To get in line with the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the airlines will implement new hand baggage rules for domestic and foreign travellers.

Cabin baggage rule change

From May 2, 2025, domestic passengers travelling through Air India and Indigo will be allowed one cabin bag with dimensions of 55x40x20 cm, the weight of which should not exceed 7 kg for economy class.

For business and first class, the weight limit for hand baggage would be 10 kg.

If the cabin baggage exceeds the allowed weight limits, the passengers will have to pay for the extra weight.

However, for tickets booked before May 2, 2024, the new rules will not apply.

Earlier, the weight limit for Air India was 8 kg for economy class, 10 kg for premium economy, and 12 kg for business class. Reports also suggest that Indigo might allow passengers to carry a personal bag – such as a purse – with them.

The BCAS is reportedly bringing these rules to manage the increasing air passenger traffic and improve security, while the airlines claim that this will also streamline the boarding process.
