Three-year-old killed after dumper lorry hits moped in Ahmedabad

A three-year-old boy was killed and his mother injured after a speeding dumper lorry collided with their moped on the Hathijan–Vastral ring road in Ahmedabad on Sunday, police said.

The victim, identified as Satvik Prajapati, died at the scene after sustaining severe injuries in the crash. His mother, Kaminiben Prajapati, a resident of the Nikol area, was rushed to hospital for treatment.

According to preliminary information, Kaminiben was travelling with her young son on a moped along the Hathijan–Vastral stretch when a dumper lorry approaching from behind allegedly struck the two-wheeler near the Apollo Tyres outlet.

The impact threw both riders onto the road. While Satvik succumbed to his injuries at the scene, his mother survived the collision and was taken to hospital by emergency responders.

Eyewitnesses said the lorry driver attempted to flee after abandoning the vehicle. However, members of the public reportedly chased him, apprehended him and handed him over to the police.

A team from the J Division Traffic Police reached the accident site shortly afterwards. Officers sent the child's body for a post-mortem examination and took the dumper driver into custody. An investigation has been launched to establish the exact circumstances leading to the fatal collision.

The incident has left the Prajapati family in mourning and once again drawn attention to concerns over heavy vehicle movement and road safety on Ahmedabad's busy ring roads.

This comes days after a 16-year-old boy died after an AMC dumper allegedly hit his electric two-wheeler near the Pirana Dumpyard junction on the Narol-Vishala road last week.
