Sabarmati Depot to Power Bullet Train Maintenance on Ahmedabad-Mumbai Route

A specialised rolling stock maintenance facility is being developed at Sabarmati to handle maintenance and repairs for bullet trains on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai high-speed rail corridor.

The Sabarmati facility will be the main maintenance centre among three rolling stock depots planned at Sabarmati and Surat in Gujarat and Thane in Maharashtra.

Sabarmati Depot To Handle Major Maintenance Work

The depot is being equipped to carry out a wide range of maintenance operations, including emergency repairs, wheel re-profiling, car body repairs, equipment and bogie work.

It will also have a general inspection shop, inspection shed, train washing plant, waste management facilities, ETP and STP systems, along with stabling lines for trainsets.

Inspection Capacity To Double

The depot will initially have four inspection lines and 10 stabling lines.

The planned expansion will eventually take the facility to eight inspection lines and 29 stabling lines, allowing more trainsets to be inspected, serviced and parked as operations on the high-speed corridor expand.

Separate lines are also being planned for bogie exchange and general inspection work, allowing maintenance activities to be carried out without disrupting other depot operations.

Infrastructure Designed For 16-Coach Trainsets

The inspection and workshop facilities are being designed around 16-coach high-speed trainsets.

This capacity is intended to accommodate an increase in the number of trainsets in service, ensuring that the maintenance infrastructure can expand alongside the bullet train network.

Focus On Water And Environmental Management

The Sabarmati depot is also being developed with environmental systems aimed at reducing its impact and managing water requirements.

Four reservoirs are planned for groundwater recharge and water storage. ETP, STP and waste disposal systems will support the depot's water and waste management needs.

The facilities are being developed along the lines of advanced high-speed train maintenance centres, with some specialised machinery expected to be used in India for the first time.

Sabarmati Depot Could Set Maintenance Standards

The experience gained from operating and maintaining high-speed trainsets at Sabarmati could provide a reference point for future high-speed rail corridors in India.

With the Ahmedabad-Mumbai corridor expected to introduce a new level of rail operations in the country, the depot will form a key part of the infrastructure required to keep the bullet train service running safely and reliably.
