A 34-year-old married man has been arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl after luring her to his residence under the pretext of asking for help to prepare tea in Ahmedabad’s Vatva area, the police said on Thursday.

The incident took place at the Chaar Maaliya Awas housing colony, falling under the jurisdiction of the Vatva police station. The accused has been identified as Imtiyaz Bawa Yusufbhai Sheikh, a daily-wage labourer who is married and has four children, including a daughter roughly the same age as the survivor.

What happened?

According to the police, the accused allegedly called the minor to his house on the afternoon of June 30, claiming that he was home alone and required assistance in making tea. After she prepared the tea and was about to leave, Sheikh reportedly sent her out again to fetch some snacks from a nearby shop.

Investigating officials stated that when the girl returned to the house with the snacks, the accused cornered her, subjected her to physical harassment, and subsequently raped her. Following the assault, the accused allegedly threatened the minor with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to anyone, leaving her severely traumatised and frightened into silence.

Threatned minor reveals incident to family

The matter came to light after the victim’s mother grew anxious when the girl failed to return home on time on the afternoon of the incident, which occurred at around 3 pm. Terrified by the threats, the survivor did not immediately reveal the ordeal. However, after struggling with fear for over a day, she narrated the incident to her parents on 1st July, following which the family approached the authorities to lodge a formal complaint.

Accused arrested

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the Vatva police deployed technical surveillance and local intelligence to track down the accused. "we have successfully apprehended the accused, Imtiyaz Sheikh," said A A Vacheta, Police Inspector, Vatva Police Station. Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
