AMC Commissioner Pulls Up Officials Over Delays in Civic Works

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) administration came under sharp scrutiny during the weekly review meeting chaired by Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani, who expressed strong displeasure over delays in key civic infrastructure projects and lapses in public service delivery. From pending traffic junction improvements to stalled bridge works and maintenance issues, the commissioner issued strict directions to multiple departments.

Traffic junction delays draw sharp criticism

Reviewing the city's traffic junction development works, the commissioner questioned the slow pace of creating free left turns, which are aimed at easing congestion across Ahmedabad. Pulling up deputy commissioners of all seven zones, he reportedly asked whether completing even a single traffic junction in a week had become impossible.

Intoxication checks made mandatory for BRTS drivers

In a significant road safety measure, the commissioner ordered that all BRTS drivers must undergo fitness assessments and intoxication checks before reporting for duty. The directive comes amid concerns over accidents involving BRTS buses and is intended to improve passenger safety and driver accountability.

Naroda bridge delay blamed on utility shifting

The commissioner also reprimanded engineering officials over delays in the Naroda bridge project, where utility shifting has slowed construction. He instructed officials that, for future flyover projects, utility shifting tenders must be approved and work initiated during the planning stage itself to prevent similar delays.

Fish deaths in lakes raise maintenance concerns

The issue of fish dying in city lakes due to low oxygen levels also came up during the meeting. Unsatisfied with the explanation that garbage had clogged aerator meshes, the commissioner directed health officials to ensure contractors maintain proper maintenance schedules and compulsory inventory registers for equipment.

Deadline for consultants on major projects

Officials were given a two-day ultimatum to complete the appointment process of consultants for civic projects worth more than ₹5 crore.

The commissioner also instructed departments to ensure that facilities such as the children's park, walkways and parking are fully ready at the Oxygen Park before its proposed inauguration in July.

Focus on water supply

The meeting also reviewed drinking water supply, with directions issued to ensure adequate water reaches low-water and no-water areas across the city without disruption.
