GCAS Opens Decentralised Admission Rounds, Colleges, Universities to Fill Vacant Seats from July 6

After completing four rounds of centralised admissions through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal, the Gujarat government has authorised universities and affiliated colleges to conduct their own admission rounds to fill vacant undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) seats.

Universities and colleges can conduct multiple admission rounds between July 6 and July 15, with admissions offered on the basis of inter-se merit. The responsibility for preparing merit lists and completing admissions will now rest with the respective institutions.

Universities to Decide Admission Rounds

Under the revised guidelines, universities may decide how many admission rounds to conduct during the July 6–15 period, and affiliated colleges can organise as many rounds as needed to fill remaining seats.

Colleges may either issue admission offers on consecutive days or complete a single admission cycle over the 10-day period by issuing additional offers based on the number of vacancies.

Institutions will be able to view students’ preference choices on the GCAS portal and prepare merit lists based on inter-se merit. The portal will not display cut-off marks, leaving universities and colleges free to determine their own cut-offs for filling vacant seats.

More than 6.32 Lakh Students Registered

This year, 15 government universities and 19 private universities are participating in the GCAS admission process. More than 5.5 lakh UG seats are available across programmes including BA, BCom, BBA, BCA and integrated courses after Class 12.

Since registrations remained open throughout the admission process, more than 6.32 lakh students had registered on the portal as of Thursday evening. Of these:

  • More than 5.68 lakh paid the registration fee.
  • Over 5.27 lakh submitted college preferences.
  • More than 5.15 lakh completed their final applications with all required details and fees.

By the end of the fourth admission round, more than 2.25 lakh students had secured admissions.

Last year, GCAS conducted 32 admission rounds for UG courses, through which more than 3.30 lakh students were admitted.

Fresh Registration Window Opens on July 5

Following the declaration of the Class 12 supplementary examination results on Friday, students who pass the supplementary examination, as well as those who have not yet registered on GCAS, can register on the portal between July 5 and July 14.

Existing applicants may also revise their college preferences or add new choices during this period. Any changes will require the application form to be resubmitted.

St Xavier's Row

This comes amid an ongoing legal challenge by St. Xavier's College against the Gujarat government's decision to make admissions mandatory through the Gujarat Common Admission Services (GCAS) portal. The minority and autonomous institution has argued before the Gujarat High Court that compulsory admissions through GCAS violate its constitutional rights under Article 30 to administer its own admission process. With the matter now scheduled for hearing next week, thousands of students who opted for St. Xavier's through GCAS continue to face uncertainty as the college has kept its admission process on hold pending the court's decision.
