Fake Identity, Secret Recordings: How an Online Friendship Turned Into Blackmail

Ahmedabad Rural Police have arrested a 25-year-old man from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, for allegedly sexually exploiting and blackmailing a hostel student after befriending her online using a fake identity.

According to the police, the accused allegedly posed as "Sonu", claiming to be a 23-year-old unmarried Hindu man, to gain the woman's trust before obtaining her WhatsApp number.

Allegedly Recorded Explicit Video Calls

Police said the accused allegedly persuaded the complainant to participate in explicit video calls, secretly recorded them, and later used the recordings to threaten and blackmail her.

Investigators further alleged that he gained access to the woman's Gmail and Instagram accounts and monitored her online activity.

Threatened to Leak Videos

According to the complaint, the accused allegedly pressured the woman to meet him and demanded a physical relationship.

When she refused, he allegedly threatened to circulate her videos and photographs on social media.

Real Identity Revealed

The complainant later learnt through an acquaintance that the accused was allegedly Bittukhan Rahishkhan of Gwalior, and not "Sonu" as he had claimed.

Police said the accused is married and has a daughter.

Arrested by Kanbha Police, LCB

Following the complaint, Kanbha Police registered a case on July 15 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Information Technology Act, and other applicable laws, according to the police.

A joint team of Kanbha Police and the Local Crime Branch (LCB) arrested the accused using technical surveillance.

Probe Widens

Police said they recovered contact details of three to four other women from the accused's mobile phone and are investigating whether more victims or any wider network is linked to the case.

Further investigation is underway.
