Bopal PSI, head constable booked for accepting ₹5 lakh bribe
Accused

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday booked a Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) and a head constable attached to the Bopal Police Station in Ahmedabad Rural after allegedly catching one of them accepting a ₹5 lakh bribe in exchange for not registering a criminal case against a complainant.

The accused have been identified as PSI Pritalben Jashubhai Chaudhary and Head Constable Dilipkumar Mafatbhai Bhoi, who was attached to the Shilaj Beat of the Bopal Police Station.

Bribe allegedly demanded to avoid FIR

According to the ACB, the complainant approached the agency after the two police personnel allegedly demanded ₹10 lakh to refrain from registering an FIR in connection with an application that was under inquiry at the Bopal Police Station.

Unwilling to pay the bribe, the complainant lodged a complaint with the Kheda ACB Police Station in Nadiad.

During the verification process, ACB officials allegedly confirmed the demand and found that the accused had later agreed to reduce the amount from ₹10 lakh to ₹5 lakh after negotiations.

ACB lays trap at Shilaj Beat office

Based on the complaint, the ACB organised a trap on June 26 by following the prescribed legal procedure in the presence of independent panch witnesses.

The operation was conducted at the Cyber Crime Office located within the Shilaj Beat premises of the Bopal Police Station in Ahmedabad Rural district.

According to investigators, Head Constable Dilipkumar Bhoi allegedly discussed the illegal gratification with the complainant before accepting ₹5 lakh on behalf of himself and PSI Pritalben Chaudhary.

Speakerphone call allegedly linked PSI

The ACB alleged that immediately after receiving the money, Bhoi telephoned PSI Chaudhary on speaker mode and informed her that the agreed amount had been received.

According to the agency, the PSI allegedly gave her consent during the call.

Bhoi was apprehended on the spot with the entire tainted amount of ₹5 lakh, which was recovered by the ACB.

The PSI was not present at the location when the trap was executed.

Case registered under Prevention of Corruption Act

The ACB has booked both accused for allegedly abusing their positions as public servants and committing offences under the relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The trap operation was led by A.R. Prajapati, Police Inspector, Kheda ACB Police Station, Nadiad, along with his team.

The agency said further investigation is underway to ascertain the complete circumstances surrounding the alleged demand and acceptance of the bribe.
