A 36-year-old woman in Ahmedabad has accused two loan recovery agents of abetting her husband's suicide, alleging that persistent calls and pressure to repay overdue home loan instalments drove him to take the extreme step by jumping into the Narmada Canal earlier this month.
According to the Sola High Court Police, Sonalben Prajapati, a resident of Chandlodia, alleged that her husband, Navinkumar Rameshbhai Prajapati, who worked as a delivery executive with Amazon, died by suicide after being subjected to continuous mental harassment by two men identified as Sahilbhai Rabari and Baldev Maldhari.
In her complaint, Sonalben stated that the family had availed a mortgage loan of ₹7.11 lakh from a private bank in 2023 to purchase the upper floor of their house. The monthly equated monthly instalment (EMI) was ₹16,282, which Navinkumar had been paying regularly until the instalment due on June 5, 2026, remained unpaid.
According to the complaint, Navinkumar returned home from work at around 4 pm on June 18 and left the house again at about 6 pm before returning later that evening. After the family went to bed, Sonalben woke up at around 2.30 am and found that both her husband and their electric scooter were missing. When she called him, he reportedly told her that he was outside and would return shortly. However, subsequent calls went unanswered as his mobile phone was switched off.
After relatives failed to trace him, the family approached the police on June 19. Later that day, Navinkumar's Ola electric scooter was found abandoned near the Narmada Canal at Jamiyatpura.
The complainant alleged that a handwritten suicide note was recovered from the scooter. According to the FIR, the note stated that no one else should be blamed for his death and attributed his decision to alleged harassment by the "loan holders", specifically naming Sahilbhai Rabari and Baldev Maldhari.
Navinkumar's body was recovered from the Narmada Canal near Sherisa village on the morning of June 20.
Sonalben alleged that the two accused repeatedly telephoned her husband, pressuring him to clear the overdue EMI and subjecting him to sustained mental harassment, which she claimed ultimately drove him to end his life.
Following the completion of the last rites, Sonalben lodged the complaint with the assistance of her elder brother.
Based on her statement, the Sola High Court Police have registered an FIR against Sahilbhai Rabari and Baldev Maldhari for allegedly abetting the suicide. Police said further investigation is underway to examine the allegations, including the contents of the suicide note, call records, and the circumstances leading to Navinkumar's death.
Police officials clarified that the allegations made in the FIR are subject to investigation, and the culpability of the accused will be determined based on the evidence collected during the probe.
