Ahmedabad Still Under Water: 244 Locations and 31 Housing Societies Flooded After Three Days of Heavy Rain

Three days after torrential monsoon rain battered Ahmedabad, large parts of the city remain waterlogged, exposing persistent drainage issues despite a drop in rainfall intensity. The city has received an average of 10 inches of rain over the past three days, with Bopal recording more than 21 inches, the highest rainfall during the spell.

Although rainfall has eased since the heavy downpour on 23 July, floodwaters continue to stagnate in several neighbourhoods. According to official figures, 244 locations and 31 residential societies remain submerged, disrupting daily life for thousands of residents.

Among the worst-hit areas are the Prime Minister's EWS housing project in Makarba and several societies in Ghuma, where accumulated rainwater has yet to recede.

More than 2,400 waterlogging complaints registered

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has received 2,452 complaints related to rainwater flooding across the city since the spell of heavy rain began.

Civic officials say water has been pumped out from 2,030 locations, but several areas continue to face severe waterlogging, with residents reporting little improvement in ground conditions.

Zone-wise complaints of rainwater flooding

The North West Zone recorded the highest number of complaints, followed by the South West and West zones.

Structural damage reported across the city

The prolonged rain and high humidity have also resulted in damage to buildings and public infrastructure.

The AMC has registered 20 complaints related to the collapse of houses, compound walls and hoardings. The Central Zone accounted for the highest number of such incidents, with nine complaints.

Jamalpur residents raise concerns over drainage works

Ahmedabad Congress Minority Front Working President Atiq Syed alleged that poor-quality drainage work has worsened conditions in parts of Jamalpur.

He claimed that drainage pipelines have been laid at a depth of only 3 to 4 feet, leading to frequent overflows during the monsoon. Areas including Kharawala no Dahle, Tadni Sheri and Tokarshahni Pol have reportedly been affected, with overflowing drainage lines causing hardship for local residents.

AMC launches large-scale clean-up operation

With mud, silt and debris spread across several parts of Ahmedabad after the heavy rainfall, the AMC's Solid Waste Management department has intensified its clean-up efforts.

A total of 7,589 sanitation workers have been deployed to clear roads, clean catch pits and remove accumulated debris from affected areas as the civic body works to restore normalcy.

Despite the easing of rainfall over the past two days, stagnant water in hundreds of locations continues to pose a challenge, highlighting the city's ongoing struggle with urban flooding during intense monsoon spells.
