An assistant professor from the sports department of Gujarat College has been booked for allegedly cheating students by promising state-level cricket selection and Air Force jobs in exchange for money.
The complaint has been registered at the Ellisbridge Police Station, where police have launched an investigation into the alleged fraud.
Student Allegedly Paid ₹99,000
According to the complaint, Pratik Mishra, a resident of Sanand and a student of Gujarat College, met Assistant Professor Pragnesh Barhat while practising at the college’s volleyball ground.
The professor first allegedly offered to help him secure a job in the Air Force for ₹15,000. When Pratik declined, he was reportedly told that he could be selected for the state cricket team by paying ₹45,500.
Believing the promise, Pratik transferred a total of ₹99,000 to the professor for his own selection and that of another friend.
No Email, Phone Switched Off
After receiving the money, the professor allegedly assured the student that an official email regarding the selection would arrive soon.
However, when no email was received, Pratik tried contacting him but found that the professor’s phone had been switched off.
More Students Reportedly Duped
During his inquiry, Pratik allegedly discovered that two other students had also paid ₹15,000 each after being promised jobs in the Air Force.
Based on the complaint, the professor is accused of cheating students of a total of ₹1.29 lakh. Police have registered a case and are carrying out further investigation.
