Torrential Downpours Lash South Gujarat: After 15.6 inches in Kaprada, Wednesday brings heavy rains in Valsad, Umbergaon and Pardi

A relentless spell of monsoon rain continued to lash South Gujarat on Wednesday, with Kaprada taluka in Valsad district recording a staggering 397 mm (15.63 inches) of rainfall in the 24 hours ending at 6 am. The downpour persisted through the morning, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting normal life across several districts.

Data released by the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar showed widespread heavy rainfall across Valsad, Navsari, Surat and the Dangs, prompting authorities to remain on high alert.

Valsad and Surat witness fresh spell of intense rain

The heavy showers showed little sign of easing on Wednesday morning, with several parts of South Gujarat receiving substantial rainfall between 6 am and 2 pm.

Valsad taluka recorded an additional 209 mm (8.23 inches) of rain during the eight-hour period, while Umbergaon and Pardi received 168 mm (6.61 inches) and 166 mm (6.54 inches), respectively.

In Surat district, Palsana logged 147 mm (5.79 inches) of rainfall, followed by Mahuva with 122 mm (4.8 inches). Navsari district also continued to witness intense showers, with Gandevi recording 129 mm (5.08 inches) and Chikhli receiving 122 mm (4.8 inches).

Kaprada leads rainfall chart as South Gujarat bears brunt of monsoon

Kaprada emerged as the wettest taluka in the state, recording nearly 16 inches of rain within 24 hours. Nanapondha in Valsad followed with 280 mm (11.02 inches).

Navsari district witnessed equally severe weather conditions, with Chikhli receiving 244 mm (9.61 inches), Vansada logging 235 mm (9.25 inches) and Khergam recording 201 mm (7.91 inches).

In the Dangs district, Vaghai received 183 mm (7.20 inches), while Ahwa recorded 128 mm (5.04 inches).

Surat district also experienced heavy spells, with Bardoli receiving 137 mm (5.39 inches), Palsana recording 119 mm (4.69 inches) and Surat city logging 108 mm (4.25 inches).

Rain spreads across Saurashtra and Central Gujarat

While South Gujarat remained the worst-hit region, light to moderate showers were reported from parts of Saurashtra and Central Gujarat.

In Saurashtra, Ghogha in Bhavnagar recorded 33 mm (1.30 inches), while Kotda Sangani in Rajkot received 20 mm (0.79 inches). Ranavav in Porbandar logged 17 mm (0.67 inches), and Halvad in Morbi recorded 19 mm (0.75 inches).

Central Gujarat also witnessed intermittent rainfall, with Khambhat in Anand district receiving 29 mm (1.14 inches) and Vadodara city recording 37 mm (1.46 inches). Ahmedabad city registered a comparatively lighter spell of 3 mm (0.12 inches).

Authorities on alert amid flooding concerns

With rivers swelling and several low-lying areas facing the threat of waterlogging, local administrations across South Gujarat remain on alert.

Officials are closely monitoring river levels, drainage systems and traffic conditions as the monsoon continues to intensify across the state.
