Surendranagar Illegal Mining Case: An Alleged ₹127 Crore Stone Theft

Authorities have taken their toughest action so far against alleged illegal mining operations in Gujarat's Surendranagar district, issuing show-cause notices to 12 people after uncovering an alleged stone theft worth more than ₹127 crore in Sayla taluka.

The action follows an investigation into large-scale illegal mining in Mota Kerala village, where officials claim minerals were extracted without authorisation over an extended period.

Alleged stone theft worth ₹127.40 crore

According to the Minerals Department, the inquiry found that stones worth approximately ₹127.40 crore had been illegally excavated from land within the boundaries of Mota Kerala village.

The scale of the alleged mineral theft has sparked concern in the district and intensified scrutiny of suspected illegal mining activities in the region.

Taking a firm stand, the Minerals Department has directed all 12 individuals served with notices to appear in person before the Surendranagar Minerals Office on 22 July with relevant documents and evidence in support of their case.

Police raid exposed alleged illegal mining

The case first came to light following a surprise raid carried out by the Sayla Police on 20 June.

Police officers raided land bearing Survey No. 275 in Mota Kerala village, where they allegedly found large-scale illegal mining in progress.

During the operation, police seized equipment believed to have been used in the activity, including:

• Six mining machines.
• Four dumpers transporting minerals.

The seized machinery is estimated to be worth several lakh rupees.

Investigation continues

The Minerals Department and the police are continuing their investigation to identify the full extent of the alleged illegal mining network and determine the involvement of those served with notices.

Officials are expected to examine documents submitted by the accused before deciding on further legal action.
